Jay Public Schools maintains a safe room/storm shelter located at the Jay Elementary Cafeteria (419 North Main St.) Parking for the storm shelter is available at the softball field parking lot, which is located on the north side of Jay Elementary School. Patrons are encouraged to then follow the sidewalk to the storm shelter, which is located on the backside of the school.

This facility is designated primarily for students and staff; however, it is made available to community members during non-school hours in the event of imminent severe weather. For safety and security reasons, the shelter is not open to the public between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

During severe weather events, updates regarding the shelter’s availability will be communicated through the social media platforms of both Jay Public Schools and the City of Jay.

Shelter Use Guidelines:
To ensure the safety and well-being of all occupants, the following rules must be observed:

Animals are not permitted
Food and beverages are prohibited
Smoking, vaping, and tobacco use are not allowed
Firearms are strictly prohibited
Radios or music devices may only be used with headphones
Shelter doors must remain closed at all times

Once the storm has passed and an official “all clear” has been issued by a district administrator, all individuals must exit the shelter promptly.

Please note that once emergency sirens have sounded, the shelter will be locked and secured, and additional entry will not be permitted.
